there is something about those birds…

It has been a while since I wrote my last blog post... let me put it this way…I was nudged to write by a little incident that happened yesterday…

I am not a bird lover, but there is something about the sparrows that visit my home every day. They come in small groups about 3-4 at a time; always at the right time mind you… at around 9 in the morning, at around 1 in the afternoon and say 5 in the evening… visit the balcony in the kitchen, knock on the window pane impatiently... in case my mom hasn’t put some rice grains on the deck already, have their quota for the day and fly off.

Each day this happens and no one gives much thought to it. Yesterday no sparrows were seen. And I missed them. I missed the chirping and the fighting…Everything about it. I was looking out the balcony every hour or so. It Is so true when people say u don’t realize u miss something unless it’s not there.

Always we tend to overlook trivial things… most times it is these small things that make a big difference. I mean there are so many little things that w pass of as routine but never realize their importance unless they are there no more.

Today morning to before leaving for college I ended up telling my mom ‘ma look out for the sparrows..Hope they come in today..’ My mom said ‘why the sudden interest? You never ask about them’. I just said “there is something about those birds ma…”

Art in the open...

I was driving back home from music class today, it was just around sunset and I saw this insanely beautiful pattern formed in the clouds, a vibrant mixture of blue yellow white and black creating a vivid pattern in the sky. I paused for a minute, may be more than a minute admiring the gorgeous pattern on the natural canvas, amazed by how nature catches our attention is seemingly small, funny but wonderful ways.

Recently I went trekking with my closest pals where I got into this huge argument about what a part of a tree branch looked like- an elephant trunk or an inverted violin….It really is quite fascinating when you can spot so many masterpieces carved to perfection by nature itself when you set your mind to it and let your imaginations run wild.

Similar thing happened the other night when I was star gazing (one of my favorite pastimes) when my little cousin said –“look the stars make a pineapple shape in the sky” and I couldn’t stop laughing.

It is so true when they say “Art is everywhere – you just have to open your eyes and look “. It is such a shame that everyone today is so engrossed in the super busy lives they lead today that they have no time to pause and admire such things.

Here is my take- take a good look at the world around – the sky the lake.. The trees etc… never know what you can find... it if fun once a while and let you imaginations flow free… even so you can interpret patterns anyway you wish and have fun quarreling with friends about what it means…. Always fun for me… :D

FREEDOM OF SPIRIT

Into the light swift and bright
flying free into the realms of light
spreading wings in full glory
like a huge wave in fury
marking the end of a gloomy night
of nothing but darkness at every sight
hailing a new beginning
of true hope and reckoning
just like a bird let out from a cage
soaring to the sky in happy rage
like the sweet river meeting the sea
simply flowing in glee
free from burdens long and old
bearing through ages fold and untold
long free in spirit and soul
leaping to reach the ever eluding goal
thirsting fro happiness never ending
making peace with one's own meaning
trying to live life at its own merit
but always keeping alive freedom of spirit

Write a letter today....

My cute little cousin was doing her project the other day, when she said “do you know that you get Stamps, postcards, Inland letters etc etc…in the post office..I said yes of course I do. But the wonder with which she said this to me made me think. In another decade may be the concept of a post office won’t exist anymore. The future generation may not know what a postcard is or a why a stamp is used. Like my cousin they might just learn about them in books.

In the forever busy world around us when we have millions of things to do in every minute, to take the time and pause to write to a friend seems an unworthy errand for many. It is such a shame that we today have stopped writing letters to each other. Everyone thinks -why take the pains to pause and think and write a letter then post it then wait for it to get delivered to just convey a message when a phone call, e-mail or instant message could do the same in a few seconds. I don’t like it but it’s a fact even I think the same way.

For just a moment think about the person at the receiving end. No matter how well drafted an e-mail is the feeling of receiving a hand written letter is so much better. It shows the effort taken to convey the message and also makes the person feel so much more important and remembered. I have preserved all the letters I got from my friends and it feels great and makes me feel special even today when I read them.

So, Here is my take on it.- Why take so much effort in school to learn and perfect the art of letter writing and to not use it?? No, that doesn’t seem right. Go ahead write a letter to a friend and enjoy the fact that you did..Spread some warmth.. I am certain it will make your day.

Why think?

I was watching the television this morning when I came across this advertisement tagline that read ‘thinking is such a waste of time’. When I sat down today to write my first ‘blog post’ so to call it I realized just that.

I am certain it happens with everyone at least once in a day where you respond to a person saying “ umm let me think…” well it most definitely happens with me. My mom asked me in today “what do I cook for lunch?”I said ‘’ hmm let me think”. The very same evening I went shopping for a gift for my friend on his birthday when my other friend asked me “would he really like this gift “???.. Again.. ..”Umm let me think”. It was my brother next he asked me If I was game for a movie?? Again the same reply...” Hmm…wait I m thinking.” But the funny thing is -I went back to the initial instinctive decision irrespective of how much I thought about it, be it the gift or the movie or the meal for the day. Mentally you already know what is it that you want then why ponder over it?

How many times have we come across situations where our reaction has been –"Ohh I thought that initially but chose the other. How I wish I had gone with my instincts". A Scientific study says -The human brain is capable of making a choice within one hundredth of a second. So ideally what is there to think so much when the choice is already made? Do we not know ourselves that we have made a decision, I don’t think that is the case - it is just this mental need to be sure of our choice and not trusting one’s instincts. But in this process what we don’t realize is many a time we tend to over think something ultimately making a wrong decision or choosing incorrectly.

Here is my take on it- when taking a decision thinking is good but it is nice once in a while to give spontaneity a chance. All that is needed is the belief and confidence in oneself and a little trust.

So the quirky thought here-Go with the flow. Its fun not to think sometimes.. try it..
